Some of you may remember a post from a few months ago when I attended the first ARSE, well believe it or not, I’ve done it again!  Yes, over the weekend I found myself at ARSE 2 – somewhere in the middle of nowhere, otherwise known as the sprawling British countryside! For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about and fear I’ve been spending too much time with crass-talking teenage boys, the ARSE (or ‘ass’ as we’d say in America) I’m referring to is Read the rest of this entry »

Western Australia winemaker, Larry Cherubino, has one heck of a week!

Six of the wines from Larry Cherubino

Ad Hoc & The Yard wines from Larry Cherubino

Larry Cherubino = winemaker = passionate guy!  I’ve spoken about this before and no doubt will continue to do so in relation to winemakers, but they are simply some of the most passionate people around (something I can relate to!).  While I haven’t actually met Larry Cherubino, I had the good fortune, thanks to Novum Wines, to sample a range of his wines – and his passion, enthusiasm and expertise come smashing through in each one.

I was most interested to try the Larry Cherubino wines, not only because they are from Western Australia Read the rest of this entry »

Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay & Pinot Noir

Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay & Pinot Noir 2006

As an American living in London, the way I look forward to spending Independence Day is not at a barbecue or watching fireworks, nor sadly, is it watching the US play in the World Cup (although all three would be great) but instead, I like to celebrate the Fourth of July simply by enjoying a good bottle (or two!) of American wine.

This doesn’t sound like it should be too difficult to do, but the sad truth of the matter is there’s a dirth of decent American wine in London supermarkets. Sure there’s the basic Gallo and Sutter Home, but I said decent American wine! So as July 4th approaches, I’m thrilled to see that a few considerate retailers have taken pity on our plight by not only stocking a lovely couple of wines from California, but also putting them on special offer! Chile vs Spain: Rosé

Ahhh Summer! It’s a particularly sunny, warm day here in London Town (which alone warrants celebration!) and so is ideal for today’s fifth round of Wines of the World Cup as we have a match-up of Rosé: Chile vs Spain!

Now in that other popular World Cup series (you know, the one in South Africa :-) ) the actual match between Spain and Chile doesn’t take place until June 25, but when it comes to wine, any day will do, and especially one like today as sun and rosé are the perfect team! I love meeting winemakers.  What passionate people they are!  No matter if they are shy farmers who prefer the company of the vines to people, or gregarious showmen, they know their wines like no-one else and their stories are always fascinating! But Randall Grahm, winemaker of Bonny Doon in California, is unlike any other I’ve met before – the perfect blend of passion, humour, smarts and eccentricity.

Known as the “Rhone Ranger”, Grahm, with his greying, frenzied pony tail, revolutionized California winemaking in the 80s when he planted Read the rest of this entry »
