Musician Maynard James Keenan takes his performance from the stage to the vineyard in this new documentary

The list of musicians that have turned their hand to producing wine includes names like Dave Matthews, Madonna, Vince Neil and Cliff Richards, so it’s not a shock that Maynard James Keenan, lead singer of the metal band Tool, has joined this illustrious collection. But while many celebrities will lend their name, money and ‘vision’ to a brand, few take part in the day-to-day business of the vineyard, but Maynard is different and the new documentary film Blood Into Wine gives audiences a backstage pass.

If you know anything about Tool (and I didn’t before watching the film) you will know that Maynard (who is also the front man for A Perfect Circle and Puscifer) is a bit of a ‘character’. He’s been on stage in nothing but skin-tight shorts and a mohawk, head banging to lyrics such as “I am the demon cleaner who saves the day”, so juxtapose that image with the one portrayed in the film of a comic wit shielded by a pokerfaced façade, shoveling soil and planting vines by hand in the middle of the Verde Valley – one of north-central Arizona’s most arid areas – and things start to get interesting! Diemersfontein Pinotage 2009

It’s no secret that I have a soft spot for the wines from South Africa. While I can safely say that I don’t have a favourite wine (or at least it changes daily!), I am currently, quite partial to South Africa as a wine region.  The wines have increased in quality dramatically in recent years and thanks to the diversity of the various regions, the array of styles is both exponential and exceptional.

So when I received an invitation to a tasting celebrating the 10th anniversary of the wines from Diemersfontein in Wellington, I was excited to try the wines.  The location (a hotel on Piccadilly), the company (other bloggers and journalists) and the enormous cheese selection, were all impressive. The wines also didn’t disappoint. Read the rest of this entry »

Wine is FUN!!You know when you turn on the radio, your iPod, Spotify etc and the song playing is one that makes your toe start tapping and the corners of your mouth curl into a smile and you can’t help but get carried away for a few moments?  Wine can do that too!

It happens when everything is in perfect harmony – just like an orchestra.  When the layers of luscious fruit balance with supple tannins and just the right amount of smoky oak leaving an elegant, silky, lingering finish is as close as the experience of a wine can come to a number one smash on the charts.

However, it’s not about rankings or being at the top of the leader board, instead it’s about our individual connection to that particular wine at that particular moment.  No matter what our mood, no matter what the weather or the latest world crisis, that first sip of the perfect wine, very much like the first notes of that one song, can make everything better – instantly.  This is when we know life is good.

Sometimes it may be a zesty, energetic Sauvignon Blanc from Chile (akin to rhythmic pop hit) or maybe a more mellow, soft, easy to get along with, Merlot from California (think a crooning Frank Sinatra) or even a powerful, robust, sincere and passionate Amarone (Pavarotti perhaps?)

Whatever the wine, whatever the music, they both have the ability to move us, literally and figuratively.  Isn’t that the greatest?!

Your Turn!  What’s your perfect wine & music combo?  Leave a comment!

There’s always time for wine!
