How many fingers and thumbs does it take to hold and swirl a wine glass while sending a tweet? As I found out recently, it’s a lot harder than it sounds! Many of us in the wine world like to share our wine experiences via Twitter, Facebook, YouTube etc (as this shameless self-promoting link to my first wine video proves!) and usually we do so surreptitiously while trying not to appear rude. However, the other week I attended a tasting where not only was tweeting not considered rude, it was required!

Musician Maynard James Keenan takes his performance from the stage to the vineyard in this new documentary

The list of musicians that have turned their hand to producing wine includes names like Dave Matthews, Madonna, Vince Neil and Cliff Richards, so it’s not a shock that Maynard James Keenan, lead singer of the metal band Tool, has joined this illustrious collection. But while many celebrities will lend their name, money and ‘vision’ to a brand, few take part in the day-to-day business of the vineyard, but Maynard is different and the new documentary film Blood Into Wine gives audiences a backstage pass.

If you know anything about Tool (and I didn’t before watching the film) you will know that Maynard (who is also the front man for A Perfect Circle and Puscifer) is a bit of a ‘character’. He’s been on stage in nothing but skin-tight shorts and a mohawk, head banging to lyrics such as “I am the demon cleaner who saves the day”, so juxtapose that image with the one portrayed in the film of a comic wit shielded by a pokerfaced façade, shoveling soil and planting vines by hand in the middle of the Verde Valley – one of north-central Arizona’s most arid areas – and things start to get interesting! What are your thoughts on Prosecco? Please leave a comment!

Hope you enjoy the very first Wine Passionista video!

Diemersfontein Pinotage 2009

It’s no secret that I have a soft spot for the wines from South Africa. While I can safely say that I don’t have a favourite wine (or at least it changes daily!), I am currently, quite partial to South Africa as a wine region.  The wines have increased in quality dramatically in recent years and thanks to the diversity of the various regions, the array of styles is both exponential and exceptional.

So when I received an invitation to a tasting celebrating the 10th anniversary of the wines from Diemersfontein in Wellington, I was excited to try the wines.  The location (a hotel on Piccadilly), the company (other bloggers and journalists) and the enormous cheese selection, were all impressive. The wines also didn’t disappoint. Read the rest of this entry »

ChablisChardonnay – from the opulent wine of Montrachet to the over-oaked monsters that sparked the ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) trend, this grape can do it all. No wonder so many winemakers work with it as it is so versatile and can be manipulated into a huge variety of styles.

However if you’re looking for classic Chardonnay, there is really only one place to go – Burgundy of course! Your first thoughts may be of sublime riches from the Côtes de Beaune or perhaps the poise of Pouilly Fuissé, but for me, Chablis embodies the timeless sophistication of the very best of Chardonnay.
