This week was Marks & Spencer’s Spring tasting for wine educators and bloggers.  I’m a big fan of M&S – their food is great (a favourite is the orzo pasta & roasted tomatoes with basil vinaigrette) – their stores are well-organized and the people are friendly.  The fact they do so many things well, has always caused me to wonder why their wines aren’t better.  I’m not saying they’re bad, they’re just not up to the standard I expect from M&S (IMHO). After a tumultuous year in 2011 that included briefly going into administration before 36 stores were snatched up by the EFB Group, Oddbins is making a comeback in 2012.

It’s always sad when wine shops go out of business because it means less choice for wine lovers, so very happy in the fact that Oddbins escaped demise, I went along to their press tasting to check out their new range.

Blind wine tasting – don’t let anyone tell you it’s easy because it isn’t!

There are definitely good reasons for tasting wines blind and when done under proper conditions, the results can be very interesting and useful.  However, other times, like the tasting I attended last night, can serve simply as abject self-humiliation – but are still great fun!

New to you?  Me too!

I recently attended a tutored tasting led by two Masters of Wine, Jancis Robinson and Lynne Sheriff, where we tasted 10 wines, including 1 sparkling, all made from the grape variety Koshu.

Koshu is a white grape variety that is grown in the Yamanashi region of Japan and it is different to anything I’ve tasted before – honestly.

After much anticipation Lot18 has arrived in the UK.  Since their launch in the US in 2010, this members-only online wine marketplace has made huge strides and already has over 800,000 members in the States and 120,000 in France where they launched just two months ago.

This week, the UK is the next region to benefit from Lot18′s form of wine discovery.
