Reading Every Wine Tells a Story Have I got a story for you! In fact, I’ve got 29 stories for you in my recently published book Every Wine Tells a Story!  As you may know if you’ve visited with me before, I am a huge advocate for wine drinkers to try different wines as often as possible so they can learn more about their palate and preferences and then be able to take their wine experiences to a higher level.  So this book (my first!!), is another way of encouraging people to do just that.

I asked my friends and colleagues in the wine industry if they would write a story about a wine that most impressed them from 2010 – it didn’t have to be the most incredible bottle they drank, nor the most expensive (although there are some of those stories as well!) but just simply an experience of a wine that remained on their mind long after the finish was gone and the bottle was empty.  And incredibly, 28 of them agreed to take part!

I am so thrilled, chuffed and flattered to have the contribution of each and every person – from erudite bloggers, passionate winemakers, assiduous retailers and skilled sommeliers to industry heavyweights Steven Spurrier, Guy Woodward, Simon Woods, Tom Cannavan, Richard Hemming and Richard Siddle  – the cast of characters (both people and wine) is excitingly varied.

Wines as great as Domaine de la Romanee-Conti 1971 and as simple as a €3 Vinsobres from the Rhone, wines from regions across the globe and of all styles: white, red, sparkling, sweet and fortified, find their place within these pages.

Also, as a bit of fun and to try to make wine relatable in a different way, I asked each expert to tell me who they thought the wine would be if it were a celebrity! Aren’t you curious to know which wines were compared to Alan Rickman, Johnny Depp, Macauley Culkin, Will Smith, Shakespeare, Charlize Theron, George Clooney, Marlon Brando, St Augustine, Nigella Lawson, Russell Brand, Christopher Walken and King Kong??!

I recently spent some time in the picturesque Niagara region in Canada. Not only is the area beautiful and boasts the awe-inspiring Niagara Falls, but is also well known for its wines, especially ice wine. Ice wines are sweet, dessert wines made by freezing the grapes on the vine (artificially freezing the grapes is illegal) which turns the water in the grape to ice, therefore thoroughly concentrating the sugars. However, they also make dry wines from grapes including Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Baco Noir, the quality of which has increased greatly over the past years and several of the ones we tried were really very good.

Watch the video above and come with me as I explore the area and learn more about ice wine and the Niagara wine region!

Please Subscribe on the right side of the page to Receive Email Notifications of new Wine Passionista Blogs and Videos and be the first to be read my soon-to-be-available new book Every Wine Tells a Story: A Collection of the Most Memorable Bottles of 2010 to Warm the Wine Lover’s Soul, as told by 29 International Experts!

I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences of wines from Canada and ice wines – please leave a comment below.

Croatian sunset

Croatia, located in the Adriatic Sea opposite Italy’s eastern shores, has 1,777km of coastline and 1,185 islands is a fantastic vacation destination! However, there is much more than sun, sand and sea to this country of just 4.5 million residents – they also make outstanding wine!

This isn’t the first time I’ve written about Croatian wine, (this was) but if possible, I am an even greater advocate for this burgeoning region than before, since a recent tasting and dinner held at Notting Hill Brasserie here in London.

Francesca Planeta is one of three cousins who own and operate the five Planeta wineries in Sicily. They have been making gorgeous wines on the Italian island for over fifteen years and have amassed a devoted following and stellar reputation.

Sicily has a long history of winemaking (at times mostly for the fortified wine Marsala), but it’s only been over the past few decades that the region has become a serious contender on the world scene for its still wines. Much of this is due to the passion and dedication of Planeta.

In this video at a recent Planeta wine dinner at Hush restaurant, Francesca Planeta tells us about her favourite Planeta wine Read the rest of this entry »

Incredibly, Christmas is not terribly far away. It’s nearly time for all the festivities to start – the work parties and family dinners leading, of course, to the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations.

There’s no doubt it’s a fabulous time of year, but also a very hectic and busy one! So if by planning ahead we can take some of the strain off ourselves and relieve as much of the pressure as possible, it’s certainly advisable.

The Wine Society wants to help us do just that.  They have added 50 new wines Read the rest of this entry »
