Decanter hosts two favoloso Italian wine events

There’s nowhere quite like Italy. The history, the art, the fashion, the weather, the scenic vistas, the people, the food and of course, the wine!  From the romantic canals of Venice, the sun-drenched Sicilian beaches, world’s greatest pizzas of Napoli and the humbling ruins of the Roman Colosseum, there is a plethora of culture to soak up in this varied and fascinating country.

Italian wine is just as diverse and equally (if not even more!) exciting. The sheer number of indigenous grape varieties is enough to fill each day of the year.  We are all too familiar with Pinot Grigio and Chianti and we are starting to recognize Gavi, Fiano and Falanghina, yet Coda di Volpe and Grignolino are experiences still to be unearthed.

So whenever an opportunity arises to taste Italian wines, it must be seized, anticipated and relished!  There are two such opportunities forthcoming for those of you in and around London.  Decanter, a magazine whose subscription I wouldn’t be without, is hosting two Italian wine events in September & October.

The first, on Thursday September 20 is the Great Winemakers of Italy tasting with Grandi Marchi – the Institute of Fine Italian Wines. In this exclusive tasting of Italy’s most prestigious producers, with iconic names such as Antinori and Gaja, 19 of Italy’s most famous winemakers will be in attendance to showcase their wines in person. This special tasting will take place at Institute of Directors on Pall Mall from 6.30pm until 8.30pm and tickets are only £25, and I understand that only a few remain.

The second event, on Monday October 22nd, focuses on the stunning white wine producing region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.  This area produces some fascinating local grape varieties of excellent quality and delicacy, well worth a closer look.  It’s a great opportunity to meet and chat with over 30 wine producers and taste some of the 200 wines that will be available on the night!  This event is also being held at the Institute of Directors from 6:30pm and the cost is just £20 per person.

It is greatly advisable to book in advance for both events and tickets can be purchased online at or by phone on 020 3148 4513.

I’ll be attending the Grandi Marchi tasting for the trade during the day so will be sure to tell you all about it, but unfortunately will miss the Friuli event, so please go and let me know how you enjoyed it and which wines were your top picks!

Here’s to trying something new, learning something new, and enjoying every glass a whole lot more!
